EMDR is a structured psychotherapy that helps people heal from distressing physical and emotional symptoms that are the result of disturbing life experiences. It helps process through:
- Painful-upsetting memories
- Accompanying disturbing thoughts
- Difficult emotions and the body sensations that go with them
It is different than talk therapy as research supports that for some people, talking about their painful memories and trauma may induce further trauma.
The process involves moving your eyes back & forth or other bi-lateral tapping such as alternating taps on your legs. This process is similar to what occurs during the dream stage of sleep- REM (Rapid Eye Movement).
EMDR is often helpful in treating:
- Physical assault and abuse
- Sexual assault and abuse
- Anxiety
- Panic attacks
- Accidents, especially car accidents
